Choosing the best key phrases to use with Google Adsense can make a massive difference to income. Knowing the Cost-per-Click and the Monthly search volume is critical.

Google Adwords Keyword Tool is used by many website owners and online writers. It provides useful data about what users search for, and the price per click that advertisers pay for various phrases. The information contained in the reports produced can be exported to Excel, and then analysed to choose the words and phrases that will give the highest income.

Use Google Adwords Keyword Tool

Google Adwords software is available for free. The volume and cost per click of any phrases entered is produced by the software, as well as up to 200 others, which are considered to be related to them.

Export Adwords To Excel

The user should first choose the columns required – usually CPC Average and Monthly Volume. There are two sections to be exported, and they need to be exported separately. At the end of each section is an option to “Download all keywords”, with an option “.csv (for Excel)”.

The content owner should download the “Keywords related to terms entered” section first, then save the data as an Excel file. Then, he should download the “Additional keywords to be considered” section, and save the data into the same Excel sheet.

Get CPC From “Estimated Avg. CPC” Column (If outside USA)

The data may appear as in Figure 1, if the user does not have the region set to USA. Instead of £10.00 in the cost per click column, the user may see “£10.00”. To strip out the number part, it is possible to use the formula

=VALUE(RIGHT(B2,LEN(B2)- FIND(";",B2,1)))

and then copy the formula into the rest of the column. If the cost per click data is in column “C”, then all the user needs to do is change each “B2” in the formula to “C2” etc.

Rank The Keywords For CPC and Global Monthly Search Volume

Assuming that the cost per click is in column "B", and the Monthly Views are in column "C", it is possible to rank each key phrase from the Google Adwords tool. In a new column, the Excel formula following may be entered:

=RANK(B2,B:B)

This shows which key phrase cost per click is highest, where a lower number is a higher CPC. In another new column, the user should enter the formula

=RANK(C2,C:C)

This shows which keyword has the most monthly page views.

Use Data To Select Best Adwords For Web Content

There is no one best way to choose the actual keywords and key phrases, but it is often useful to choose the keywords with the highest CPC, provided the monthly volumes are not too high. This may sound incorrect, but there is so much competition for the highest CPC and volume words, that it is better for most web content owners to aim for less sought-after keywords. Continuous monitoring and experimenting is essential.

Summary of Excel Export and Analysis of Google Adwords

Choosing keywords and phrases that give the highest earnings begins with the Google Adwords tool. Exporting and analysing data is easy using Microsoft Excel, and some useful functions are included in this article, especially for those outside the USA. More information about Excel functions is available free on-line, or in Excel for Dummies by Greg Harvey.
